Vitamin B12 is also called 'the king of vitamins'. It is a water-soluble vitamin that we mainly get from animal products. As more and more people adopt a vegetarian diet, deficiencies are rapidly increasing. To prevent (or rectify) this, we highlight everything you need to know about this vitamin!
Functions of vitamin B12
To start, we have listed the most important functions of vitamin B12 for you. Vitamin B12…
- Supports the production of red blood cells
- Is good for the cell division process
- Promotes energy metabolism
- Has a positive influence on the immune system
- Is good for memory
- Contributes to learning performance/ability
- Contributes to extra energy in case of fatigue/tiredness
- Has a positive influence on the functioning of the nervous system
In short, vitamin B12 is a rather important, indispensable vitamin. But how do you ensure you get enough?
Sources of vitamin B12
Per day, you need at least 2.8 micrograms of vitamin B12 (with a well-functioning immune system). We primarily find the vitamin in animal foods; think of liver, steak, and chicken breast. But we also find vitamin B12 in fish and dairy products; mackerel, tuna, salmon, sardines, whole milk, and full-fat yogurt are all sources of vitamin B12.
This does not mean that all these foods are optimal for your health. In general, dairy products have a negative impact on our digestion. We also prefer not to eat too much meat. For vegans, it is impossible to get enough vitamin B12 from food anyway.
B12 injections or B12 supplements?
The most important step? Replenishing your vitamin B12 supply! We often get asked what the right choice is; injections or supplements?
Injections are given with Hydroxocobalamin, but not everyone can convert this well in the body. A (lozenge) tablet bypasses the gastrointestinal tract and is absorbed into the bloodstream via the oral mucous membranes. In addition, there are two absorbable forms of vitamin B12 in the supplement. Order our Vitamin B12 supplement here.
