Our hormones play an important role in regulating the body's various processes and functions, including those on the outside. This means that when our hormones are out of balance, it is immediately visible in the skin, hair, and nails.
Our hormones are therefore involved in almost all processes in the body. If an imbalance arises due to, for example, stress, toxins, or unhealthy food, then (just like with the intestines) an imbalance occurs in our overall health. A healthy lifestyle is therefore essential to keep hormones in balance, allowing our skin and hair to glow as well.
Our hormones affect our appearance in the following ways:
1. Sebum production
Hormones, especially androgens like testosterone, influence sebum production in the skin. Excessive sebum production can lead to oily skin and acne, especially during puberty when hormone levels change significantly.
2. Skin texture
Hormones can influence the structure and texture of the skin. For example, during the menstrual cycle, hormonal fluctuations can lead to changes in skin texture, such as smoother skin in one period and an irregular texture in another.
3. Skin sensitivity
Hormonal changes can affect skin sensitivity. Women, for example, often experience changes in skin sensitivity during the menstrual cycle, where the skin can be more susceptible to irritation and inflammation.
4. Skin aging
Hormones also play a role in skin aging. As we age, levels of hormones such as estrogen and progesterone decrease, which can contribute to the development of signs of skin aging, such as fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity.
5. Skin conditions
Hormones can influence the development and exacerbation of certain skin conditions. For example, hormonal fluctuations can contribute to the onset or worsening of acne, rosacea, and melasma.
6. Hair thickness
Hormonal imbalances can cause hair problems. For example, during pregnancy, hormonal changes can lead to thicker, fuller hair, while hormonal fluctuations after childbirth can cause hair loss. Hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can also cause hair problems.
