Sunlight is incredibly important for our health and well-being. After all, without sunlight, life is barely possible. The entire ecosystem runs on light, and our bodies also benefit from it.
Why is sunlight so important?
1. Vitamin D synthesis
Sunlight is the most important natural source of vitamin D. When exposed to sunlight, the skin converts a form of cholesterol into vitamin D. This vitamin supports the immune system, muscles, and bone health.
2. Mood and mental balance
Sunlight is often associated with stimulating serotonin production, a neurotransmitter that plays a role in mood, sleep, and energy balance. Sufficient daylight intake through the eyes helps transmit signals to the brain that influence how you feel. Especially during the winter months, when sunlight is scarcer, many people seek extra support for their well-being.
3. Circadian rhythm (biological clock)
Daylight, especially in the morning, helps regulate your internal clock. This promotes alertness during the day and supports restorative sleep.
4. Skin health
Moderate exposure to sunlight is sometimes mentioned in relation to skin comfort for certain skin types. Sunlight stimulates, among other things, the production of melanin, a pigment that helps protect your skin.
Important additional information
-
Vitamin D production stops as soon as your skin turns red.
-
Sunscreen can significantly reduce vitamin D production.
-
A short exposure (5-10 minutes) to sunlight without protection may already be sufficient, depending on your skin type.
Magnesium is also needed for the conversion of vitamin D into its active form. After a sunny day, your body may therefore have an increased need for magnesium. Fatigue after a day outdoors can be related to this, among other things.
Note: excessive exposure to UV radiation can be harmful. This includes sunburn, skin aging, or an increased risk of skin problems. Always protect your skin well and find a balance in your sun exposure.
