Proteins in brief

Is protein really necessary?

The word protein is derived from the Greek word 'proteios', which means 'of the first rank' or 'of primary importance'. This refers to the important role of proteins as building blocks for the body, where they are involved in, among other things, tissue structure, muscle building, and metabolic processes.

What makes protein so important?

Our skin, muscles, bones, and blood are all made up of proteins. For example, proteins contribute to the maintenance of muscle tissue and strong bones. They consist of chains of amino acids that the body obtains through food.

How much protein do you need?

The general guideline is about 0.8 to 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, depending on age, activity, and personal dietary choices. If you take the example of an average person, this amounts to 1.2 grams of protein x 70 kg = 84 grams of protein per day.

Many people don't always get this solely from food, even though it seems like enough protein sources are eaten daily.

If the total intake is lower than the daily requirement, it may be useful to see if there is room to add more protein-rich foods.

Do you need to get protein from supplements?

Proteins are widely available in foods such as meat, chicken, fish, dairy products, cheese, legumes, and nuts. Therefore, a supplement is not necessary to get enough protein.

However, some people find it practical to use a protein shake as a supplement to their diet, especially on busy days when it is more difficult to eat enough protein-rich meals.

Example of protein in food:

Suppose you eat 2 eggs for breakfast, a bowl of Greek yogurt for lunch, and chicken for dinner. Then you get the following:

  • 2 eggs = 14 grams of protein
  • 150 grams of Greek yogurt = 9 grams of protein
  • 100 grams of chicken = 27 grams of protein

In total, you would get 50 grams of protein. If you assume the example of 84 grams per day, you may still need some extra protein. You can supplement this through food, or — if that feels more practical — with a protein shake.
