Do I really need supplements?

Opinions differ on the necessity of supplements. I used to find supplements completely unnecessary myself, but this changed when I experienced a burnout years ago. I learned more about the value of various nutrients, which are found in supplements as well as food. I also discovered the power of combining them and the importance of timing and dosage.

As a result, I am now a strong advocate for the use of supplements. In practice, I see that many other people also benefit from supplementation. Sometimes, a nutrient deficiency can unknowingly develop, the consequences of which are only noticed later. This brings me to 4 reasons why supplements can be so valuable in my opinion:

1) Our food contains fewer nutrients

A large part of the food in supermarkets is processed. Important nutrients are often lost in the process. Modern agricultural methods also affect the mineral density of fruits and vegetables. As a result, even with a healthy diet, you can still build up deficiencies in certain nutrients. Supplements can then help to replenish these deficiencies.

2) Our living environment is changing

We live in a world full of stimuli, substances, and circumstances that can put extra strain on the body. Consider air pollution, artificial light, noise, and exposure to substances such as exhaust fumes or cleaning agents. The body needs nutrients to cope with these.

We also spend less time outdoors than before, which affects the natural production of vitamin D. Supplementation can be a practical addition to support vitamin D intake, especially with limited sun exposure.

3) Our nutritional needs are changing

Age and lifestyle play a role in nutrient requirements. Older people absorb some substances less efficiently, such as vitamin B12 or magnesium. Athletes have an extra need for proteins and micronutrients. In some situations, it can be difficult to meet these increased needs entirely through diet. Supplements can be a valuable addition here.

4) Our brain and body are under pressure

Many people experience mental strain and are looking for ways to support their well-being and resilience. Chronic stress can affect the digestive process and reduce nutrient absorption. In such a case, a supplement can be an additional source of nutrients that suit your needs.
