Boosting Your Immunity During Winter

Sniffles, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, or just feeling a bit off. You might recognize these feelings during this time of year. In the winter months, our immune system could use some extra love and attention. In this blog, we'd like to give you some tips on how to boost your immune system during winter.

Why is your immune system weaker in winter?

During the winter months, the temperature and humidity are ideal for bacteria and viruses. These conditions allow them to survive well. Our bodies find these weather conditions less pleasant, as it's harder to maintain our body temperature. The blood vessels in your nose and throat constrict, reducing blood flow to these areas. This lowers resistance and makes the mucous membranes in the nose and throat more susceptible to infections.

How do you boost your immune system during winter? Read 5 tips below!

  1. Make healthy choices

While you might crave more sugar in winter (link to article: /blogs/blog/winter-cravings-meer-trek-in-suiker-dit-seizoen), it's important for your immune system to continue making healthy choices. Your gut will be extra happy with fiber during these months, and a healthy gut contributes to a healthy immune system. Did you know that 80% of our immune system is located in our gut? That's why it's important to eat as healthily as possible.[1]

  1. Ensure sufficient relaxation

Too much stress and a strong immune system do not go hand in hand. Excessive stress lowers your immune system and can cause many unpleasant ailments. Take enough time for yourself, for example, by meditating, journaling, or reading.

  1. Exercise, preferably outdoors

Ensure you get enough exercise, preferably outdoors. Exercise not only has a positive impact on your brain (link to blog post coming online Tuesday) but also on your immune system! Physical activity regulates the immune system, making it better able to respond to infections.

  1. Maintain a regular sleep rhythm

Do you often feel tired in winter? That's understandable, as we need more sleep during the winter months. Because it's dark longer, melatonin production increases. A good night's sleep and a regular sleep rhythm are especially important during these months.

  1. Support your immune system with supplements.

Basic supplements are always important for good health, but in the winter months, there are a number of specific supplements that can support your immune system.

We believe it's important that a therapist always properly assesses which supplements suit you. This can be done through personal supplement advice, both in person and online. We recommend reviewing your lifestyle and diet every 3 months, in combination with seasonal changes, to always take supplements based on what your body needs.
