Rhodiola as an adaptogenic herb

Rhodiola rosea, also known as rose root, arctic root, or golden root, is a succulent plant that grows in Iceland, Greenland, Siberia, and China, among other places. Rhodiola rosea has been used for over 2000 years as a herbal remedy for various health complaints. Rhodiola as a supplement is prepared from the fresh rhizome and roots of the plant. Rhodiola is one of the most well-known adaptogens, and various health-supporting properties are attributed to its extract. For example, rhodiola is beneficial for fatigue* and can help support the nervous system*.

Adaptogens and stress

Rhodiola (extract) is an adaptogen, a herbal plant, which promotes better adaptation and resilience to changing conditions. Adaptogens are herbs that help the body find balance; this is called homeostasis, meaning that the ability of living organisms to regulate their internal environment within certain limits is enhanced, despite fluctuations or threats in external conditions. This includes, among other things, blood pressure, blood pH, temperature, and blood sugar levels.

Rhodiola as a supplement

Rhodiola as a supplement is generally safe for use for up to 3 months. However, if Rhodiola is intentionally used to constantly push the limits, there is a risk of burnout. It is therefore important to work on the cause of your stress in the meantime and to use Rhodiola as a support.

In a 2011 report on Rhodiola rosea, the European Medicines Agency concluded that (standardized) rhodiola extract is safe.

Never combine natural remedies with regular antidepressants on your own initiative, as this is not without risk. Seek advice from a pharmacist regarding interactions if you wish to combine Rhodiola with your regular medication, such as sleeping medication or antidepressants.

It is not recommended to use Rhodiola during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
